One of our songs has a whacked out intrumental interlude, and we want to throw in some random noises like doors squeaking and slamming, and people walking around upstairs, rattling the ceiling. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to do it?
Also, a sortof unrelated question, but how do the drums on When the Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin sound so huge? I love that drum sound!

You can use whatever you use to record vocals or acoustic instruments to record the random noises that you're talking about. If you have a choice, a test and measurement mic (like an ECM8000) or a small diaphragm condenser might be good mic choices, but whatever you have available should work.

In your unrelated question, those drums sound so huge because John Bonham is playing them.

Ya, Levee is the song in which they put mics next to the drums and also at the end of a stairwell. Natural reverb.

And because Bonham was a freaking monster!

The Bonham sound: I read about this in "Guitar Player", might be Guitar World. It's a guitar magazine. Anyway, John always said that if he could see a mic anywheres near his drums while he was playing, he'd flip out, so all the mics were at the end of this huge stairwell, and the natural accoustics of the place just made the sound come to life. It never really was tried with another drummer other than Bonham, though!

And sounds? My band made a song of sounds, including the ones you want to do! We actually used a large diaphram condenser, and pointed it at what we needed. We also had one track where we boosted the gain real high, all left the room and hit record. Then we made noises in other parts of the house--that's ethereal!
