Ok, here' the scenario.

We are doing an initial run of 500 CDs for industry release only. The graphic design is finished, the mastering is finished. We figure we want slimline jewel cases, full-colour j-cards, proper silver-back CDs, and one or two colour print on the front of the CD.

All the prices I've received from Irish and UK companies seem higher than I expected at the moment (the best is about 1300Eur or $1600), so I am gonna check out some U.S. ones.

There is a local studio run by a friend of mine who has a CD-duplicator, and I can get my hands on jewel cases for pretty cheap here also(150eur for 500). So another option is to simply get 500 cds and j-cards printed with graphics, and do the rest here if that keeps the cost down.

If anyone has any experience or recommendations in this area I'd love to hear them.

Nathan.

New Keyboard Mag (Prince on the cover) has an article discussing duplication/publicity deals.

Parti-pants had a link to an outfit in Salt Lake City that sounded really inexpensive. I shoulda saved the link and didn't, my bad. Maybe he can cough it up again...

A "duplicator" will burn CDs but won't give you the quality of manufactured ones. I was researching CD makers for a recent project and it looks like you can do 1000 for under $2US/CD, but for smaller runs the prices go up. We are doing ours piecemeal: some of the printing is done one place, the CD manufacturing another, and so on, and we may beat the package price.

You can real CDs made for a lot less than that. Once you get over quantities of about 100-200, CDR duplication prices start looking pretty bad.

I've used QCA a couple times, and they do real cd replication in runs as low as 300. Their smallest package will get you 300 shrinkwrapped, sellable cds for just $690, or 500 for $836. That's just a single panel insert though. For a four panel insert package the price jumps to $981 for 300 or $1135 for 500. Still well under your duplication price.

The quality of their product is high enough that I do recommend them to people. There are no hidden costs, it's all inclusive except shipping, which they don't screw you on.

My drummer told me today that he's found a place in England that'll do 1000 cds with 4 page booklet, print on the cds etc for about £600 all in. The minimum is 1000 though. I'll ask him who it is when I remember, and post it on here.

If you do use them, let me know how it turns out. So far I've had two good jobs with them, and was planning on using them for the comp cd.

There are other companies out there that could provide CD Duplication services. They even have a better deal providing good quality CDís with warranty ensuring customer satisfaction. Donít settle for anything less since no one wants to regret in the end. So broaden your search and youíll find what your looking for.

People still do CD runs of their music? For gig intermission sales?

Even if you claim to be able to ensure customer satisfaction, which is what the warranty turns on, I say the warranty should reflect quality as much as customer satisfaction. That way, at least one of the parties won't be disappointed.

What do you think?
