Do you ever use a compressor without a gain reduction meter? Knowing the gain reduction's useful, but is it necessary? Just use your ears?

Sorry slow reply ! 8 months later....

You are right, once you understand compression what it's goals are and what it is capable of doing, the GR meter is less important. GR metering is often not representative of actual compression as the ballistics can have there own character which may not relate to what you hear. However when learning a compressor to know the approximate GR is useful for the beginner to add make up and avoid the main change being volume which the ear is sensitive to.

So by 'making up' what you hear when A/B ing is compression time constants on the audio not vol change.
