When I write a good song, I just sing it over and over and over again. It's like I never get tired of it.

they come like the wind (or the tide),that moment where a phrase, or a feelings, or a scenario strikes and usually a combination thereof.... the words flow effortlessly and the music just finds its way to match the cadence of the syllables we turn into musical sound

the listener is touched, but the songwriter knows at a much deeper level

some would call us wordsmiths, or composers, or lyricists... none and all are correct definitions of what a songwriter does

a poem, a story, a thought, an imagination put to tempo and melody

How awesome would it be to hear one of your own songs as a listener, for the first time and fully-formed?

That's what happens for me once in a while. I write a song and record it, all within a day, and it's a keeper. I love it when that happens.

I've had one or two (that I can think of) that basically were recorded as a concept and that became the working foundation with the scratch tracks being keepers

though more often, it re-work, re-listen, walk away, come back, re-arrange/start over. A few songs were originally conceived years ago and 'back burnered for a few more years

and there are those we simply don't talk about... Rolling Eyes

You know what works for me the most often? Just keeping at it, and let outcomes take care of themselves. I don't even worry about how the song's gonna sound in the end - I just go for it in the moment. Go for it in the moment and sing and play your ass off - that's all there is.

that works best for me when I don't record it... then i have my own delusions of greatness that no one can argue with Laughing

Yeah, that's cool, but I guess I was more thinking of just hearing it completely assembled with no preconceptions or even any idea of what will happen next. I've put together rough stuff in a few hours and, although it definitely has more "newness", I still basically know what's going to happen. The thing I'm talking about is more just impossible.

Yeah you know even with songs I put together "spontaneously", it gets tough to call it done. More often than not I'll listen to the mix and be like "This could have sounded better..." and I'll even end up changing the arrangement after that, but the original hook or idea could have been something that I wrote in 5 minutes, so there's a weird balance of spontaneity and perfectionism...

being a "live" player, the spontaneity changes the tunes on a regular basis, especially if the line up of players changes....

and OK, day of the week, what everyone's moods happen to be, who's eaten, who hasn't..... Ever since I stopped playing covers, each time I step up to the mic it's a new adventure!

I'm always surprised at how live improvisation not only doesn't happen that much anymore, but it's almost frowned upon in people's attitudes toward music.

One of the things I like about recording really new stuff is that the performance is still carrying a lot of that 'fresh from the other side' feel, and it makes it really easy to improvise stuff - the song han't settled into a fixed form quite yet.
