Is it possible to run a dynamic mic thru a preamp into an RNC compressor and into a Digidesign MBOX2 Mini interface? Or amI wasting my time? I'm not really sure because of the RNC being unbalanced, and according to their tech literature, the output signal from the compressor should be sent via a 1/4" jack.

Forgive my ignorance, but audio recording of any sort is a totally new experience for me.

I'm not really sure either, but I bet the answer to your question is yes. The line from the compressor to the Digidesign unit can be really short, so an unbalanced signal won't make a ton of difference. Cable everything with 1/4" jacks.

But a question: what preamp are you going to use, and why are you thinking about using a compressor?

Absolutely possible. I do it all the time. I really like the quality of compression I get from my Toft ATC-2, and the preamps are way better than the ones on my control surface. Just use the compressor sparingly -- you put it on the front end of the signal, you're stuck with it forever.

dobro and skulpter, thank you both for your quick responses to my question. My bad, I meant to write condenser rather than dynamic mic in my original post.

As for the pre, I would like to use an ART TUBEMP because it is small and light weight, and considerably less noisy than the pre built into the MBOX2 Mini. The reason for using the compressor is I currently record elderly people reminiscing about their lives and their experiences. The recordings are often made where I have little or no control over the recording environment(s) and the people being recorded often have never even spoken into a microphone before.
