I'm playing a lot of bass these days. I do a lot of bass parts out of the tonic-dominant thing on adjacent strings. I care way more about results than technique, so I use first and fourth fingers for this cuz it's easy, instead of first and third fingers. This reduces possibilities obviously, when it comes to doing other stuff than that C&W tonic-dominant pattern. How about you? Do you stretch and do the 'one finger for each fret' thing that guitar requires? Or do you cheat too?

Well, it *is* Saturday night. Smile

But are you drunk with *all* four fingers of your left hand?

whew ..... a fun night.
I had the night off and you know what I did?
I gigged for free with some friends who paid me in beer and, of course, I wanted to maximize my profits.

As for your question ...... I use all four fingers on bass.
But I'm an actual bass player as opposed to a guitarist playing some bass for recording.
If you're finding yourself playing a lot of bass I would think you'll get to using all the fingers ...... it's the only way to play a lotta stuff.

I use all four fingers of the left hand too. But it's that tonic-dominant stretch on adjacent strings I'm talking about. When you're doing a basic C&W pattern for a D chord, for instance. The tonic's on the fifth fret of the A string and the dominant's on the seventh fret of the D string, right? So do you fret those with your first and fourth fingers, or with your first and third fingers? I use first and fourth cuz it's easier. I'm wondering if 'actual' bass players such as yourself ( Laughing Smile Smile ) do the stretch, or do the lazy like me?

I would use the 1st and 3rd fingers for that.

Damn. And your hand's smaller than mine, probably. Do you do the stretch without moving your left hand?

Smile I started out as a double bass player, and with double bass you always support your pinky with your ring finger. So on bass guitar, I still use 1,2 and 4 for most of the parts. I do stretch for the fancy stuff, but only from fret 7 and further. Don't worry, if you can play what you wanna play, there's no problem.

Be careful with over stretching!

ummmmm ..... no I wouldn't have to move my hand for that..
Pretty much just reach the fingers ...... that's not that far ...... only a couple frets.

I don't think anyone else has the limited stretch that I have, I also have an ultra-short pinky. On a QWERTY keyboard my maximum stretch is Q to I. I adapt my playing style to suit my limited reach and I make sure I don't over-stretch. It usually entails my left hand having to move up and down the fretboard to reach the notes, and I use my pinky.

Tonight I tried the 'one-finger-for-each-fret' thing that Steve does. Too many buzzing strings for my taste. I'll keep playing with it to see if I can nail it, but I'm going back to what works otherwise.

Now I can do it if I'm happy to have that third finger fret the string at a really acute angle.

Do what works for you ....... I said that I'd use 1st and 3rd for that because you asked, NOT because that's what I think you need to do.

Yeah, understood. Cuz I'm a stay-at-home, I don't see a lot of musicians in action, so it's valuable for me to have people like you and Tjarko weigh in on this stuff. I've heard both of you play bass, and more than admire it, I like it, so that's why I trust it. And yeah, I take everything I read here in the context of my own playing and ability (or lack of ability). But it's still valuable. Thumb Up

Well, bass is pretty much the only instrument that I play. The one and only right answer is obviously:

It depends.

For the most part on what the third note will be.
