How far away from the mic do you put the pop screen?

Depends on the screen and the application. Cloth with a vocalist? Inches. Metal? A couple more inches.

Sometimes it's there to stop 'accidental' plosives - Other times, it's to keep the vocalist farther away...

Thanks.

I'm using an AT 4050 for vocals and I like it a lot, but it seems to sound best at a distance of about a foot. I'd like to work the mic much closer if I could. (I play and record guitar at the same time, so close-miking helps.) Do you know of a mic as good or better than the 4050 that can be worked closer up without a ton of proximity effect?

I also play guitar while recording it.
I tried recording the git before playing it once but the track was way too quiet.

I'd change it, but it's more fun this way.

I'd just get a cloth screen (they're easier on the nose), go off-axis a whisker (will help tame proximity a little) and use the screen to help keep your position.

That's how I'm using the screen now. Thanks, John. I'll check it out.
