so, now that Alyssa made her big drumming debut, she wants a set...anyone have any suggestions for something that won't break the bank, but she won't out grow in a few years?

Ludwig accents or Pearl exports. They are "entry level" and a little expensive, but I have seen tons of guys gig for years and years on their first set.

Avoid anything like westbury, CB, or TKO as they are cheap plywood, and will not be what she wants if she pursues playing.

+1 on the Pearl exports- and there's a lot of used kits around. Hardware is decent and over time the cymbals can be upgraded. I have kit in my studio and most of the drummers I work with are perfectly OK with playing it

Ithink ~$1000 newand $500-600 used (though you may have to replace heads) ... and check the cymbals to mae sure none are cracked or "keyholed" (center mounting hole is worn larger and often somewhat resembles the old skeleton key holes

standard disclaimer: I am not a drummer!
