Hi guy's,

Usually when I get a client, 99% of the time the mixing has been done quite well and I have to do very little on the mastering end to make it sound like a million bucks.

Unfotrunately a client approached me that had a fight with the guy that mixed the music, so he now only has a mix that is half descent. I don't see a problem with making it sound good but the hi-hats stand out a bit too much.

Will I be able to do something with the hi-hat. There is a frequency that I cannot find which is annoying on the hi-hat. They almost sound like they were not compressed enough to sweeten the sound and thin them out. The frequency sounds like it's between 1k and 4k.

How can I reduce this frequency without affecting the sound too much? I've tried eqing but I need to eq a lot to control it and the music suffers especially with such a large freq range 1 - 4.

Perhaps a multi band compressor will be my salvation.

I would appreciate it if you could get back to me as soon as possible.

Thanks for you help.

Honestly, I would work as the level-head go-between to see if YOU can get the mix files from the engineer. Hi-hats can be a bitch.

I figured that when I was trying to correct the issue and couldn't find a solution no matter what I tried! The engineer has basically shut the door on these guys and doesn't want to do anymore business with them. Not pretty.

Anyway, I'll have to give them the songs as they are.

Thanks again for your help.

Old post, but in these instances you need to just if some S channel eq or simply eq the channel that needs it L/R need to judge it. In addition some HF compression could be in order. You need some good monitoring situation though as there will be an inevitable side effect.

The deal is getting the best "goal" with least side effects.

Can be a tricky job for an experience amstering engineer too.

Hamstering engineers can handle the job with their eyes closed though.
