Female singing ONE WAY OUT by Allman Bros. -- Band has suggested a gender change on the lyrics. Any suggestions??? I'm really at a loss to make this flow and does it really matter?? Rolling Eyes THNX!

Ain't but one way out baby, lord I just can't go out the door.
Ain't but one way out baby, lord I just can't go out the door.
Cause there's a man down there, might be your man I don't know.

Lord you got me trapped woman, up on the second floor;
If I get by this time I won't be trapped no more.
So raise our window baby, I can ease out soft and slow.
And lord, your neighbors, no they won't be
Talking that stuff that they don't know.

Lord, I'm foolish to be here in the first place,
I know some man gonna walk in and take my place.
Ain't no way in the world, I'm going out that front door
Cause there's a man down there, might be your man I don't know.

I assume that the gender change is being driven by a female vocalist (since there's really no other obvious reason to screw with it)? Heretical comment, driven by personal experience with an extremely demanding female vocalist in a very unpleasant band situation (now over, thank Gawd): if the band really wants to do the song, tell Ms. Vocalist to freakin' sing backup for once, and let the strongest male vocalist take it. It makes the impact of the song that much *greater* when folks realize that the band actually changes lineup to acommodate it, and the question has to be "Is it about the music, or about stroking an ego?".

Seriously. This is one of a class of songs that just shouldn't be messed with just to make the lead vocalist happy. It'd be like trying to regender "Black Velvet" to suit a male vocalist when you have a perfectly dynamite female backup vocalist just waiting for a chance to shine. You could do it, of course, but the question has to be "why?". Sometimes, the best change to make is a responsibility/lineup change and give somebody else some air time, instead of hacking on the song. Just my opinion, but one based in having had a downright hellish experience in this general area...

uh skod... I'm the one (Band) that suggested changing gender as the infamous Ms. Salt does a great job on the song...

we'll just keep it a bi-sexual song....

Apologies if I offended anyone, including Ms. Salt (he said, fingering the spot where the stitches in his scalp used to be). I've just had enough bad experience with regendering (in either direction) to have a violent and permanent allergy to it now... I'll shut up and go away.

no .... you have to change the lyrics to suit the singer.
Just change man to gal or whatever .... if I heard a female singer sing that song with man/words .... that's absolutely the first thing I'd notice and I'd be be laughing and making fun of it for a couple of weeks.
On the other hand ..... if I heard a girl do a good job of singing it with appropriate necessary word changes ...... I'd be impressed and wouldn't really notice the word change because it would be a natural sort of thing.
Just my opinion of course but that's what makes it right!

Heh...no apologies needed...
Trust me I know of which you speak as I've worked with that type as well. I am no diva... In fact, I NEVER wanted to do the song in the first place. But at the time, one of the members really wanted it in the lineup and after doing the round-robin testing, I was the only fit for the song. So...that said, Iíve been doing it and have now totally bonded with the tune. It was suggested to try a gender change but I havenít attempted it yet for the very reason that you put out here!!! ha ha So thanks for the confirmation Skod, Iíll keep my ďmanĒ song just the way it is!!

I was okay with Rita Coolidge doing Crazy Love without the gender change, but it was a little odd.

And when ratso and I were out doing the Santarchy thing, one of the clubs had a "girl" (of sorts) lypsynching some disco song with an oft-repeated phrase inviting the listener to suck something she shouldn't have had in the first place. Except she looked like a tranny, so I guess it would depend whether she was pre- or post-op. I think she made Bill (aka Pere Noel) nervous - he rounded us all up and announced we were leaving NOW before she was two minutes into her song.

Well, this conversation certainly took an odd turn. I'll shut up now.

Veruca, is your username taken from the band or the Willy Wonka character?

Seanmorse:
Both actually. I am a fan of the band but actually chose the name tongue-in-cheek as the Willy Wonka Veruca!! You know...the terribly spoiled, bratty, envious one!! My complete polar opposite!! Twisted Evil

For what it's worth (and it ain't worth much), I wrote a tune that's a woman's tune, but I sing it anyway. I suppose that if I record it and release, it'll make me sound awfully gay. I suppose I should get a woman to sing it. But I don't care. It's just a good tune. I'll wear a dress and sing it if it'll make you feel better. Cool

You're the singer. Don't sing it if you don't want to. They should learn your material. Besides, the premise is ridiculous. If I walked into a club and heard you singing that I'd walk right out.

Sing it the way it's written. So the guy in the song swings both ways. Who cares.

Things always work themselves out. How does K.D. Lang handle those gender issues?

She handles half of them.
