Just got one last night! Woohoo!

I swore after I outgrew my VS-840 that I would never return to the world of standalones, but the H-4 is so tiny, and the built in x-y condensor thing is genius.

Nice writeup in this month's TapeOp, but I had already made up my mind to buy it anyhow. Watch out now, baby!!!

we'll give you some time to play around with it and then ask you how you like it!

Meantime, I'll have to crack open my Tape Op & read about it.

Have fun,

JR

Hey Dafduc ,
i had one of these on watch on Ebay last week , i had a look in this forum to see if there was any info on it , as in , INDEPENDENT INFO , not advertising spiel ,

So if you have had a chance to "play" with it , can you please give us your opinion of it ????

It feels almost toylike. I recorded a 1-hour mass on it (that turned out to be my swan song - see whiny bitchy aux bus thread), sounded okay on headphones, but like utter crap on cheap speakers. When I went to download to disk, I got an error, so I put it away. Might get a chance to troubleshoot tomorrow.

Oh ....!!!!!!!!

Did you use the built-in mic ? or an external plug - in ??

Was the "crap" noise ?? as in background noise , or poor recording by the unit ??

I just picked up a Zoom H-4 the other day. As a radio journalist, I use it for recording interviews and ambient sound more often than music, and I have to say I was quite impressed.

The thing that surprised me the most is that the sound quality I got using the internal condenser mics was far superior to the audio quality I could achieve using an external dynamic microphone. That said, the best recordings came from an external condenser mic, using the unit's 48v phantom power.

For $250 - $300, I think this is a great little recorder. But you have to keep in mind that this is a budget unit, and isn't going to be as sturdy, full featured, or sound as good as high end gear.

I've posted some sound clips and a review on my blog: http://bradlinder.blogspot.com/2007/03/zoom-h-4-review-reporters-recorder.html

Sorry, teek, missed your question before.

The crap was my 3/4" laptop speakers, LOL. The wav sounded good through my M-1's. Awesome sound from the piano.

a recording is here - problems with recorded vocals due to placement, but the piano sound shines through. These are the built-in mics:

Another toy to put on the wishlist. If I buy one, I'll have to blame it on you Daf. My wife will be in touch Smile

I recently got a H4 for field recording and it's fantasitc...once you get you head around the menus and sub menus

The XY built in mic is really impressive to especially for the stereo imaging...I used it to reocrd passing vehicals for a comp i'm currently working on and its suprising the recoding quality is has for a hand held device. I haven't yet tried the XY with two external mics yet, has anyone had any good reocrdings using it that way?

I've since also jumped on the bandwagon. I know Daf already has one somewhere, but I'll be bringing mine and a tripod stand, to do some recording at Ducfest. The recordings are NOT great, just kind of middle of the road, but would be great for recording the festival.

I see this is an old thread. I got mine a couple months ago and really likes it- intially. We bought one because it's easier in a band situation to record a new song for others to learn. But I have found it has some limitations. I also used it to record a local live jazz band, and though the sound can be surprisingly good, I find that if the volume (of the musicians) is up too high, you're gonna clip, no matter how you turn down. You have to move away from teh source if it's too loud. Anyone else have this experience?

One thing it is very useful for in my case is recording bass. Usually the bass pickups get a lot of noise from the equipment in my studio room, but with the Zoom, I can take the bass out of the room and take it to my bigger living room, further away from wires, CRTs, and other noisy things and I get a cleaner track...
