I guess I have a hard time imagining having a voice other than my own.

But if I had to choose... Peter Gabriel comes to mind, as does Eric Woolfson, formerly of the Alan Parsons Project.

Yes, Rodgers was/is the vocalist for Free, Bad Company, the Firm, and (lately) Queen.

Paul Rodgers is singing for Queen??!! Shocked WTF?

Isn't that like asking Rod Stewart to sing for Iron Maiden? Confused

Chris

Strewth. They just got done with a world tour, where you been meng?

I didn't actually answer the question at the top of the thread. I'm shocked, absolutely shocked, that there's seemingly no love here for Frank Sinatra. You could learn a thing or two about phrasing from him, and if you actually try to match his phrasing you will become a better vocalist, I guarantee it.

To keep it simple,

Alison Krauss (I'd love to have her voice!)
Peggy Lee
Nora Jones
Patsy Cline

Very Happy

"Alison Krauss (I'd love to have her voice!) "

Have you ever thought that Alison Krauss occasionally sounds a bit like Dolly Parton? I don't think it's just the phrasing and delivery; I think it's also the basic character of her voice.

Absolutely. Dolly must've been a huge influence on Allison. AK is probably the only country/bluegrass/pop singer to approach Dolly's breath control and vocal purity, and vice versa. I'm fairly sure neither has ever needed their vocal tracks autotuned either. Smile

I'm not sure who Alison's influences are, but I have heard a live track of her singing with Union Station and she does have the purest, controlled voice I've ever heard. I think she even beats Dolly in some areas. I want to see her in concert someday. I'm gonna check that out and see who her influences really were. I'll be back with the info hehe. Smile

Well, I'm male, and I wouldn't mind sounding like Ella. Or singing like her either. Cool

Damn! I was just getting set to post the same thing. You saw that movie on VH1 Classic with him traveling in the RV?

I found out today he's coming to town next week. The venue is a little shoebox but he'll pack it and it will be hard to move around unless (as he is likely to do) he moves out into the street.

I said I would come back with some info on who Alison Krauss's influences are and I did find some articles on it, but they never said who her influences were. She was raised in a musical family and just started singing at a young age. She didn't really have any specific influences. This may be why she has a unique voice. Here's some interesting bios I found about her. Mostly her career and they have similar info, but it's still cool stuff.

Ray Gillen [R.I.P.] Badlands, Black Sabbath, ect. The guy had a blues, whiskey and cigarette voice; but the range and soul he had was amazing.
