Roman - pick one from your list and say why you like their songwriting so much.

Every single artist on RP Radio, because they all to a person have grabbed the bull by the horns and are living the dream (however vicariously).

As productive musicians and songwriters themselves, none of them could be classified as "passive" listeners.

Kudos to all of them.

*** EDIT: Okay, so I wasn't supposed to refer to the board. You may open fire now.

It's more than the RP Radio people, it's also the people in the Listening Room and Collab Forums. I'm happy that you're describing us as 'having grabbed the bull by the horns'. I mean, it's much more flattering to be described as grabbing the bull by the horns than being described in terms referent to the other end of the bull lol. But I don't see the musical activity of these people as 'living the dream', cuz that makes it sound like we're copying images we picked up from MTV or something. I prefer to see the music that arises on this board as 'living the music'. Semantic nitpicking on my part, I guess. I think what I'm trying to say is that some of the music I hear here is really pretty original. If that's 'living the dream', then so be it. Cool

I'm not living the dream, I'm just getting rid of the melodies I'm hearing. Smile

Andy Partridge, for sounding like a walrus with prostate cancer singing Beatle tunes that never made the record but still rock like hell.

Rufus Wainwright, witty lyrics and a beautiful sense of melody. I like how his lyrics move the music to places, instead of the other way around.

Prince, but only on one condition: Wendy and Lisa must approve before he can release a song. Let's face it: Prince's personal taste is pretty bad. He needs the girls to control his quality. They're the only ones who ever sent him back with the words 'wait a minute, you're fuckin' Prince....go back and write a better song'. The albums with those girls are the best ones.

Matt Mahaffey (Self): for writing quirky pop songs in a way I've always wanted to do: every 4 bars something else happening.

Loudon Wainwright III: the lyrics, the lyrics, the lyrics

Stef Camil Carlens (Zita Swoon): pretty much the same reasons as Matt Mahaffey.

And Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney of course, for obvious reasons. And Joni Mitchell.

Stevie Wonder needs Wendy & Lisa too, LOL. But when he rocks, he rocks big time.

Why Neil Young? Sure, lots of people like his work. But why do *you* like it?

Glen Phillips is my official man-crush right now. Love the lyrics and sound, and he permits live recordings to be hosted at archive.org.

His vocals have changed since his Toad the Wet Sprocket days, but I like the direction he's taken with the music.

He just sounds so dang good live: http://ia310118.us.archive.org/2/items/glen2005-08-30.dsd.flac/glen2005-08-30set2t02_vbr.mp3

nobody mentioned Steve Goodman and Harry Chapin yet so I'll nominate the two of them! Whenever I need inspiration for story songs, I always cue up some Harry.

When I was a kid-
Neil Young
Yes
ELP
Johnny&Edger Winter
Jimi(The Cry of Love)
Jethro Tull
The Who
Alice Cooper
And anybody else back when the radio rocked.
These guys all knew how to talk to frustrated teenagers, especially Neil.

Today it's pretty much the same, plus all the country greats and some later additions.
George Jones
Walon&Willie
Dolly
etc.
Neil Diamond
Harry Chapin
Bruce Springsteen
ELO
Pink Floyd
David Bowie

They know how to talk to frustrated adults. Smile

Lennon/McCartney. They've been my favourite songwriters since I was 4 years old. Their music is the soundtrack of my life, and the main reason why I am a musician.

I'm wondering, does anyone else think of composers and songwriters as being different?

I've always admired Zappa's work, but consider him a composer.

The Lennon/McCartney team was fantastic, but I always thought of them as songwriters.

I don't know why.
