I'm on the ready to try sumpin, but wanted to ask. most of my crap has always been with ld condensers thru presonus blue tube pres., but I'm thinking of trying to do a few tracks of acoustic mandolin, and am wondering if the tube effect of the blue tube, using a sm57, has any effect?

I haven't used the Presonus unit, but I'm sure it would add its distortion to anything you put through it, including the 57. But in my experience, the preamp is the least important part of the sound. Mic, mic position, and room are way more significant to the sound. Just a simple thing like putting a reflection filter behind the mic that you're using and also hanging a quilt behind you will have a huge effect (positive) on the recorded sound. Then you have the joy of trying a dozen different mic positions and comparing them to find the best one.

thanks, mang, was wondering if the tube will make the track sound better than without, kinda like a tube amp sounds different than solid state.

I'm gonna try both ways and compare.

Saturation, distortion - I'm using it more and more often these days. Usually adding it at the mixing stage, but for things like electric guitar, I dial it in with the amp drive and don't need to add more later. I mean, why not nail it at source? If I had that Presonus unit, I'd be trying out the distortion for sure.

I'm looking to track acoustic stuff. If'in I can make myself do it, which is not easy, it's like the being scared all over again like the first time you hit the red button.
