Staple Singers. They're a staple, yes they are.

This World

"This World, this world, my mind holds this world
My mind holds this world in it's hands
This World, this world, my mind holds this world
My mind holds this world in its hands"

Dunno bout you, but this strikes me a just a little bit Buddhist.

"And when I think about this world
I can shape it just like clay
I can make myself a Garden of Eden
Or throw it all away"

But then they show you their roots. They think they can do something. I can make myself a Garden of Eden. Mmmmm... Have you ever tried to do that? Cuz that's the only way you'd know if they knew what they were talking about. Unless you were the power that shapes things. I mean, I can handle that idea cuz everything changes, right? I'm not particularly upset when things aren't my doing. But taking responsibility for who you are (I can make myself a Garden of Eden) damn that's a weight to carry. No wonder they did the Robbie Robertson song Laughing .

"This World, this world, my mind holds this world
My mind holds this world in it's hands
This World, this world, my mind holds this world
My mind holds this world in its hands"

There's that Buddhist bit again. I'm having second thoughts though. Help me here.

"And when I spin this world around
I can turn night into day
I can make myself a sunny tomorrow
Or bring back yesterday
Yesterday, I can bring back yesterday"

Well who would want to bring back yesterday? It's no better than the future, and that's no place to spend your time either lol. I wonder what they were trying to say. If I was a *really* good songwriter, I'd know the answer to that question.

"This World... "

great song

Yeah, I don't know what they're talking about in that last verse. But one thing I like about the other two verses is how they're claiming the sort of power that God has. The song's all about power and potency and ability to change and do. If a person with an ordinary ego thinks that, they're insane. But if you lose the personality, then God comes through, and the song makes sense. At least the first two verses. But that third verse, I dunno... if I had that kind of power (maybe I do and I just don't realize it? Smile ) I wouldn't be reaching for tomorrow or yesterday, I'd be accepting NOW.

It's not the personality that needs be lost, it's the ego. All resistance comes from the ego, getting in the way of the heart. The heart sees true, the ego judges and rationalizes that it is protecting

I've heard it said that we all have the power, we've just forgotten... and most of us have fallen asleep. Am I asleep, or sleepwalking, or dreaming I'm awake?

everything is temporary. by the time I write this, it woill already be entering what we think of as the past... and yet when you read it, it will be in the now

and then gone

time is a funny thing

Yeah, you're right about the distinction between ego and personality.

And then there's this:

"God and the devotee are one, in his very nature the devotee is identical with God." - Nisargadatta

Nisargadatta was Indian, but that Staple Singers song reminds me of the Indian teaching in the quote, but in so many other places as well. Indians aren't as shy as Christians about seeing or being divinity in human form. That's why the lyrics in the SS song surprise me a bit. But they were probably writing about something else entirely. Laughing

he Way of Mastery says that we are all one with the Christ/God mind, we cannot remember where we began

everything we 'perceive" is from within.... it's all illusionary, temporary.... much like the picture we 'believe' we see on the television... when in fact it is mostly space between the pixels, like our "universe" which is composed of atomic particles which are points of energy in a void/vacuum.

Our 'resolution' of sight only see's the 'big picture'... magnifying glasses and microscopes allow us to see at a much finer resolution, but even they have physical limitations beyond which we can only imagine (and some of us believe exists)

The SS were very gospel/Christian based... and they wrote/sang in a different 'reference point' / time

the world was a different place then

granted, we could not be communicating as we are now... but it was a simpler time, despite the social/political upheaval taking place... which now (in retrospect) seems not so tumultuos (sp?)

u need another u

tumultuous

Yeah, a different time. I'd love to know what was going through his head when he wrote that last verse. What 'past' was he thinking about resurrecting? If you believe in time, that's a pretty good idea - bringing something cool up from the past. But if you don't believe in time, then dealing with past or future isn't something you'd invest a lot of time in.

Anyway, time to go.
