well ....... Peavey has these speakers that, when too much power hits them, a light bulb will light up dissapating the excess power. Maybe it's something like that.
Doesn't sound like anything I need.

I USED TO HAVE -- WHOOPS - CAPS LOCK --

I used to have "optical protection" on most of my car audio stuff up until just the last 10 years or so... The concept works very well. I've not heard of it in such amazingly low-voltage scenarios though...

how do they shunt the excess power?
Or does it just pass thru the lamp all the time but the resistance increases once it's enough to light the lamp?

That's basically it -- Excessive power turns to excessive heat. Come to think of it, there was always some sort of capacitor in those things also...
