what's the difference between the top hi-hat cymbal and the bottom one?

The bottom one traditionally is heavier. Some are even marked which is which. Zildjian New Beats come marked but with just the black stenciling . Once that wears off another way to tell is that the bottom hat is always much cleaner that the top hat which gets aged like regular cymbals with dust and sticking .

Like most things , it's not a rule . A lot of guys mix and match models
and weights . If the top hat is a lot heavier than the bottom you risk flaring it out and become the proud owner of a 14" China Crash !!
