Hello,

The band im in wants to cover the following songs:

I heard it through the grapevine by Marvin Gaye/CCR

and I miss you by Blink 182.

How would we go about getting this legalized so we could sell our album, we this songs on it.

Also, what is some recommendations on our to copyright our own material

Thanx

Start here for the licensing

http://www.harryfox.com/index.jsp

I personally don't even bother to copyright our songs FORMALLY. In the U.S., your copyright exists once you've put the song in some tangible form, like a lyric sheet with chord notations, or a recording...or even a live performance. I know people disagree with me about my whole "don't bother" copyright stance, but I have a bazillion ways to prove my songs are mine without giving the government more money.

in Us the pro agency and the license agency are differents, here in spain it's the same company sgae that does both things, so it depends on the country, still i think for putting them in cds you might need permissions from the artits or managements in question.

If you only sell in the US you don't need permission, you're automatically granted a mechanical license. Costs about 9 1/2 c per copy last I checked. Harry Fox is a good place to start.

Fine print is you can't change the melody or lyrics without permission. Usually the copyright holders don't care if your version makes some changes, but it's a technicality they can use if they want to stop you. And of course, if they're evil and have big bucks, they can just harrass the crap out of you with their lawyers for fun. cf: Led Zeppelin, Elton John, Fantasy Records...
