It's been awhile , hello everybody. I (I mean we, our band) are looking to invest in a portable standalone unit to record; 1) our practices/jam sessions 2) off the cuff busk sessions 3) anything else not covered by the above We're not looking for anything fancy, just something to get ideas down and the rare good take, but without hooking up mixers and computers and eight million wires and then losing the moment... 1 mic-1 cable-1 portable recorder (ie battery powered if possible) Also, will it come with a mute cymbal feature? :idea: Much obliged _________________ Now I sit around...filling the blank time...

the Boss MICRO BR. can record 4 tracks. has a built in mic.....also can be powered by 6 AA batteries. seems like a good choice. its around 200 bucks.

I do the one mic thing a lot with my choir - I'm pretty happy with the USB snowball, other than the noise floor. But USB won't do you much good if you don't have a laptop. I have the Zoom 16 track. I love it. Very easy set up for live recording and much more.

I'll toss up a Studio Projects B1 and it does a pretty nice job. It's also one tough mic for a large condenser. I like the Boss idea, though - those flash drives are about as fast as you can get. _________________ I feel the same way about disco as I do about herpes. Hunter S. Thompson

For what you're describing I use my DAT-Walkman and a stereo mic. But, of course, DAT's obsolete. I also use a Fostex MR8HD for live recordings ..... 4 track simultaneous recording ..... 8 track playback around 32 hours of 4 track recording ...... all for around $400. _________________ Of course your take on me, is going to be different than my take on me --- GT

the LSD sounds fun After many painful months of butting heads with my drummer, he decided to buy a mac laptop with a small firepod interface...and whatever crusty mics (radio shack!) are laying around cuz the mac will fix all the crustieness, apparently it can fix anything (you know lots of compression, eq etc) ... I was kinda eyeing those MR8's a couple years ago, but they seem to have their fair share of glitchery no? I think if I do get my own it'll be either the Micro boss or the zoom 16, with a nice condensor w/dynamic to mix maybe... We were using an ECM 8000 with an SM58 into an old pc which garnered reasonable results for what we needed IMO, but the pc just wasnt good enough....I digress sorry...rips hair out Lots of good suggestions to keep in mind, thanks for all the replies! _________________ Now I sit around...filling the blank time...

I haven't run into any glitches with my MR-8 yet but I don't do any sort of studio mixing or adding tracks or anything with it ...... just strictly for 4 tracks of live recording. Be sure to give us a report on what you get and how it works. There's always room for more gear! _________________ Of course your take on me, is going to be different than my take on me --- GT

You should ask that question in the Microphone area. I use a large diaphragm condenser though.
