Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a pro or semi pro digital camcorder with video editing software included or separate for production purposes. Things that will be produced would be commercials, documentaries and interviews..that sort of thing.

Is there industry standard equipment or packages similar to Pro Tools in this area or do most people buy software and camcorders separately?

If anyone with knowledge in this department could help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advanced,
sonicpaint

Hey sonicpaint,
There are a few options, but price range will help weed the field... you have any idea what kind of budget you have to work with?

Well, budget is a definate must. However I'll detail my recent purchases, since our requirements seem similar.
Camera I bought was a Sony HDR HC3, which is a consumer camera but with definate qaulities that lend itself to the prosumer category. Mainly high definition. This camera was $1700 Canadian.
You next step up to a prosumer cam in the Sony line is HVR-A1 whick is about $3000.
The software I use is Sony Vegas 6 +DVD, software that comes with any camera is useless. Vegas is great because it very similar to ACID, so the learning curve is not so bad.. Plus Sony Vegas is one of the few platforms that has High Def capture built in. If your a mac user then Final Cut pro is a good choce.
Sony Vegas is around $700 Canadian.

hope this helps

Hey Guys!

Thanks for your replies. I should have mentioned the budget so people who respond have a better idea of what price range I was looking at. Sorry guys.

I was thinking between $1000 and $2000 for the camcorder, the best price point for the money would be best though. I seem to favor the Canon products a bit and was wondering what people thought of those cameras in that price range. I know Sony makes some great stuff too. Does the Sony have a direct input for a microphone? Which brings me to another question.

What type of microphone is best to use with a camcorder. What do the News people use for a mic? Is it a condenser or a dynamic mic?

loutus, I'll look into that camcorder for sure.

Thanks again guys

The sony hdr hc3 does not have a mic input, that was not a concern for me as I record my audio seperately. Here's a link for a very good web site.

Best all around camera: Sony PD-170. Excellent low light handling. Dual XLRs /w phantom power, zebra. Excellent camera.

Best software:
For Mac- Final Cut Pro
For PC- Adobe Premire
IMO, YMMV
Mics. The one on the PD-170 is pretty good. At work we use EV's 635a's. Rugged to the point of rediculous. Pretty flat response. Omni.

Darn, when I was looking, the cheapest I could find that camera was for $2700. But now that I have the HDV I don't know if I could go without.

Hey Guys!!

Thanks for posting! I think you guys just gave me the info I needed to pick my stuff. I'm going to go with the Sony ( if I can get it cheap enough here) and the Adobe Premier software.

Thanks for everything guys,
sonicpaint
