I've just bought cakewalk Project 5 which comes with a couple of synths and while I have an old Casio midikeyboard, it's occurred to me that I'll probably need one of those controller keyboards with the pitchwheel & some assignable knobs & faders. Is this what you guys use, or is the mouse good enough? If so what would you recommend. I've been looking at something like the m-audio Radium http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Keyboards/Midi/MIDI/Controllers?sku=701367 or the E-Mu Xboard 49 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Keyboards/Midi/MIDI/Controllers?sku=706284 . Are either of these worthwhile? Don't know much about midi recording, but I'm assuming I can record a synth to a track, then go back later and fiddle with filters, and envelopes etc. and record those changes as well? Also what's an aftertouch keyboard?

I got an Edirol Pcr-M30. Really good, easy to use and configure. I use it for making music (with Live5 or Reason) and as a control surface for mixing music (with Traktor Dj Studio). You will love midi recording and working! You can even copy and paste your midi clip to create bass and drum (or anything else) with the same midi clip! After, you will have hours of fun working with filters and effects! It will depend on your software...

No. Aftertouch is also known as channel pressure, and it happens after the initial hit - while you're holding the note, you can press down and bring in vibrato or filter sweeps (or...). Hey thanks for the responses guys. Gotcha on that aftertouch Daf ta. OK so I've got one vote for the Edirol unit from djsly20. Someof the reviews I read of the M-Audio controllers were not too flattering, and some guys were recommending Roland/Edirol gear instead, so I'll probably head in that direction

There's Novation too, and Alesis. My M-Audio Oxygen fell apart pretty easily after a couple of years. But my Novation K-Station (NOT a dedicated controller) has also been pretty fragile. OTOH, my new CME UF-5 kicks ass. It's big and heavy, though. Still, like it a lot.
