Wow. I just saw Steve Vai here in Austin tonight. It's my second time seeing him in concert. Talk about a motivational moment! That man exudes personality from his entire body, and his guitar is simply an extension.

It was an all ages show, and there was a kid, probably about 13 or 14, there with his parents. When I saw him dancing to the music, it really made me think that we truely will get out of this musical funk that we've been in for so long in the US. That kid, or someone like him, will grow up to be the next great musician that changes music forever, and just blows us all away.

Steve Vai is awesome....hes one of the few "shredders" (not sure if he falls in that category officially) that no matter how fast he plays, it exudes personality and soul and expression and depth and so many other descriptive words.......

the only time i saw him play live was with DLR and he was awesome........

via is awsome. I was rocking out to passion and warefare the other day. I think my favorite of his stuff is the early "flexable" - defintly hear the Zappa influence in there.

The only two other guitar players I have heard that have such a COMMANDING PRESENSE in what they play is Eddie Van Halen and Les Paul. These three guys make the rest sound like they are doodling around.

Vai isn't a shredder. He's an accomplished player that can shred. The only other guy who raised as much emotion as Vai in me was Eric Johnson. Seeing those two was like a religious experience.

Steve Vai is a great player, yes.... but he single-handedly destroyed Whitesnake by playing the songs way past to-death.

I like players like Nuno, and Pete Lesperance from Harem Scarem. They can shred like absolutely-freakin'-crazy, but still know that they are playing the *song* first.

Interesting observation. I enjoy Vai best when he's just "doodling around" instead of his full (over)blown productions. Smile

I still stand by my opinion that Allan Holdsworth can run circles around him, sure he may not look as cool, but when its time to make music, I hardly gain anything out of vai's playing.

Whoops.. this topic is old, sorry!

Wow this thread is old.

But what about Steve Morse? It's been about 12 years since I saw him live until I just saw him with Peep Durple on Sunday night. He played an instrumental called "Loss of Contact" (or something like that) which was typical Steve Morse, but live and with Roger Glover, Ian Paice and Don Airey backing him it put goosebumps on my arms and other various body parts.
